Pope John XXIII Regional High School senior Emma Valiante was honored as a National Girls and Women in Sports recipient on Sunday for her efforts as a student-athlete during the 32nd annual “National Girls and Women In Sports Day” at Seton Hall University in South Orange.

Valiante was chosen as the Lions’ honoree after being a dual-sport athlete in lacrosse and indoor track and field while also being one of the school’s top academic students. Only one girl from each of New Jersey’s high schools is selected for the honor and attends the statewide event, hosted by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association and Tri-County Orthopedics.

Between the two sports she competes in, Valiante has excelled as a midfielder for the Lions’ girls lacrosse team over the last three years and is one of New Jersey’s top girls lacrosse players. She holds the school record for career goals scored (175) and points (234) while directing the Lions to a 36-19 record and three straight state tournament appearances, including a North 1, Group 2 semifinal appearance last year as a junior.

For her efforts, Valiante will be continuing her academic and lacrosse careers next year at NCAA Division I George Mason University.
