Pope John In Memoriam

To All Graduate Parents and Alumni,

So often we hear from graduates, “Did you know that so and so passed away?”  So often we do not know about the death of a former parent, Pope John alum or former faculty member.

Once a month we will post the passing of any former parents, Pope John alumni or former faculty members.  We still have the traditional first Friday Liturgies at Pope John and we also celebrate Liturgies on feast days when those feast days fall on school days.  Starting on the first Friday in March we will post the names of the deceased who have passed away during the previous month.

How do you post the name of a loved one (parent, alum, or faculty member)?  Simply send the name to Austin Braun at austinbraun@popejohn.org

Pope John Mourns The Loss of Mr. Herb Caton

It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Herb Caton, head custodian of Pope John XXIII Regional High School from 1965 to 2007.  Herb passed away March 29 at his home after a lengthy illness, which he bore with great patience and dignity.  

The community of Pope John is indebted to Herb for his 45 years of dedication to the care, maintenance, and upkeep of Pope John. He was proud of his work beautifying the Pope John campus and was responsible for planting many trees on the school grounds.  Herb was “green” before “green” was popular, and we are the beneficiaries of his eye for beauty.  He served with honesty, dedication, and integrity.  

We extend our sincere thanks to Maude, his beloved wife of 56 years, and his three daughters for generously sharing this gracious man with us.  Let us commend his beautiful soul to the loving embrace of God and let us keep Maude and Herb’s daughters in our prayers during this very sad time.

Herb, you were a beautiful human being, and you will be greatly missed.  Thank you for your years of service.

Say not in grief that he is no more, but in thanksgiving that he was.

He has gone no further from us than to God, and God is very near.

Visitation is Tuesday, April 4th, 4pm - 7pm at Goble Funeral Home, Sparta, New Jersey.  Burial is Wednesday, April 5th, 1pm at North Hardyston Cemetery, Route 94, Sparta, New Jersey.
